“My fear is that W Social is just another for-profit Big Tech startup that happens to be based in the EU. We don’t need that. We don’t need more European surveillance capitalists and people farmers. We need ethical alternatives working for the common good.” – Yours truly, in @ _elena ’s excellent expose on W Social. https:// blog.elenarossini.com/w-social -public-institutions-and-the-theater-of-european-digital-sovereignty/ Do read the article to the end, especially noting the bit about the composition of their board of advisors, which includes an ex-Google AI lead and an ex-Paypal Chief [Violate Your] Privacy Officer who now works at Tools for Humanity (Sam Altman’s “Sci-fi dystopia? Hold my beer…” identity farming startup that wants to scan your eyeballs). # WSocial # EuropeWashing # PrivacyWashing # BigTech # peopleFarming # surveillance # capitalism # EU # ATProto # fediverse

Who is this?
Samuel Harris Altman (born April 22, 1985) is an American entrepreneur who has been the chief executive officer (CEO) of the artificial intelligence company OpenAI since 2019. Altman attended Stanford University for two years before he dropped out and co-founded Loopt, a smartphone geosocial networking service. Loopt was acquired by Green Dot Corporation for $43.4 million. In 2011, Altman joined Y Combinator, a technology startup accelerator and venture capital firm, and was the company's president from 2014 to 2019. He is a billionaire with many investments including Reddit, Worldcoin, and Helion Energy. Altman co-founded OpenAI in 2015 and became its CEO in 2019, a role that made him a prominent figure of the AI boom. He supervised the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. In 2023, he was ousted by the organization's board of directors for not being "consistently candid". The move was met with significant backlash from employees and investors, resulting in Altman's reinstatement five days later and the formation of a new board.

“We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water & people buy it from us on a meter.” - Sam Altman As someone whose books were taken without permission to train OpenAI, I have a problem with this. How can a company claim to own work it didn’t create & sell it back to us? https:// gizmodo.com/sam-altman-says-in telligence-will-be-a-utility-and-hes-just-the-man-to-collect-the-bills-2000732953
Imagine if someone photocopied every book in the public library, burned the library down, and then opened a subscription service for the copies. That's the AI business model.
